LEGS - Lexus Design Disrupted

30 Sept 2013

LEGS and Lexus Collaborate with MADE Fashion Week, MILK, Coco Rocha and Giles Deacon to Create Live Holographic Fashion Experience during New York Fashion Week

Lexus, in conjunction with award-winning multimedia studio, LEGS, created Lexus Design Disrupted, an innovative holographic performance art experience to celebrate Lexus’ all-new 2014 IS performance sedan.

Kicking off MADE Fashion Week, Lexus Design Disrupted brought together the worlds of fashion, art and technology in an event that forecasts and reinvents the future of fashion shows. With the creative vision of directing duo, Radical Friend, LEGS was able to bend space and time to execute the grand scale project.

On September 5th 2013, holographic technology, avant-garde dance, and 3D projection mapping fused together and erupted in a stunning and magnetic tale. Supermodel Coco Rocha played the heroine in this visual spectacle, which showcased a bold and theatrical retrospective from the archives of designer Giles Deacon. The event completely captivated a fashionable and star-studded audience.

The story unfolded in three acts, tracking Rocha as she battles opposing forces on a path to independence from darkness to light. Through choreographed movement and creative expression, she splits into holographic clones of herself, breaks free from the dark, metaphorical chains that bind her, unleashing a surge of vibrant color as she ultimately finds her own liberation. Filmmaker and artist Andrew Thomas Huang of LEGS served as creative director for the show, which included breathtaking choreography by Ryan Heffington and original compositions by HEALTH.

The fifteen-minute show was intricately timed and coordinated, as Rocha and her dancers performed in front of a backdrop of projection mapping. Musion’s holographic screens overlaid and intersected with the group’s movement, appearing at times to reach out and shatter into the audience. Heffington mapped out a complex routine of trigger points and marks, synchronizing the movement with digital undulations and dramatic cuts and fades. Many elements were interactive and created live on the scene, reacting to Rocha’s movement in a stunning technical display that rendered reality and fiction interchangeable.

“There are so many incredible things happening and being reinvented in the fashion world right now,” said Kirby McClure of Radical Friend. “It gave us inspiration to try something new. With this show we wanted to create a piece that was more narrative and character based, beyond models walking on a cat walk. Our aim was to use holograms, music and dance together in a way that gives you a fully immersive experience.”

“We wanted to transport the audience into a surreal world and a narrative inspired by the beautiful patterns and shapes of Giles' collection,” adds Julia Grigorian of Radical Friend. “We used holograms as a visual tool, a story telling device, and by complimenting them with 3D projected environments, and live dancers it began to feel very new, yet harmonious.”

With the support of Team One, agency of record for Lexus, this prodigious collaboration reflects and reaffirms a shared focus on design and technology, and a willingness to push boundaries. “LEGS’ credo is to use technology in artful, inspiring and meaningful ways,” says Adam Joseph, Executive Producer and Co-Founder of LEGS. “Lexus Design Disrupted is our testament to that philosophy.”

The Stunning Face Typograpghy Posters by NYC Designers Sagmeister & Walsh

22 Sept 2013

TAKE IT ON SVA Posters created by the New York City based Design firm Sagmeister & Walsh
“Take it On” posters for the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. We looked around our studio and realized that the Sagmeister & Walsh team is rooted in the SVA community. Stefan teaches at the MFA Design department, Jessica teaches at the BFA Design department, and Santiago was a student at the BFA Design department. We embraced the maxim by literally taking on the typography on our faces. We worked with renowned photographer Henry Leutwyler and creative retoucher Erik Johansson to achieve this poster series which is now displayed throughout the NYC subway stations.

Exploring The Relationship Between Sound & Typography Through Creative Visualization

14 Sept 2013

Meet Aleksandr Prohorov, a UK based graphic designer, illustrator and a passion for combining visual audio to typography. Check out Aleksandr's personal project where he combines theses elements of design in creating "Sound vs Typography" that he describes as a
experimental self-set project that explores the relationship between sound and typography through different ways of visualization.

Waveform Alphabet:
The typeface is produced out of existing font and waveforms. Each character features a waveform cut out from a dubstep artist's song, whose name begins with that particular letter.

Light + Sound = Type?
The idea of this piece is to capture full 26 character alphabet using sound and light through light sensors, some electronics and long exposure photography.
Four light sensors were directed to the centre of the space between them in the X shape to ensure full area coverage. Small torch was used as the light source for sensors to respond to.
While the light source was moved in the area of sensor response, long exposure photography was capturing light streaks in shapes of letters.

Singing Pencil:
Cyborg pencil that is modified to produce sound while using it for its original purpose - drawing/writing.
The secret here is that human body and pencil graphite are great electricity conductors and paired with some simple circuit, piezo sounder and some foil allows the pencil to visualize with sound.

MPC Engineers Big Change for Kia

9 Sept 2013

MPC recently teamed up with David&Goliath and @radical.media on an ambitious overhaul of Kia’s famous hamsters. Directed by David&Goliath executive creative director Colin Jeffery, MPC handled all VFX work and finishing on the spot, which introduces the all-new 2014 Kia Soul. Watch the original spot HERE.

Totally Transformed follows the overweight hamsters through a total fitness makeover, from the gym to the pool to the barbershop, mirroring the efforts of a Kia engineer as he perfects each element of the new Soul in a far-off lab. These dual makeover montages collide in the final scene, where the three now-stylish and svelte hamster mascots swagger from their flashy overhauled Kia Soul onto a red carpet.

From pre-previs to the final grade, MPC created the hamsters and seamlessly integrated them into Jeffery’s live-action footage. Each shot was pre-visualized with an emphasis on performance, which helped inform the approach to directing actors on the shoot. Special attention was paid to ensuring realism for the hamsters’ look; MPC artists implemented a custom fur and physically-based shader set up to create photoreal characters in live action environments.

The story required MPC artists to push their set up a step further than previous incarnations of the Hamster series. A sequence involving a hamster diving into and swimming through water proved to be an engaging challenge for the team, requiring heavy duty real world solutions. “We really wanted to bring the personality out of the hamsters so we built advanced facial and body muscle rigs to achieve fluid integration with the live action,” recalled VFX Supervisor and 3D Lead Andy Boyd, “the result needed to be unnoticeable – like you’ve seen a giant hamster in a speedo and goggles before, and we happened to get some nice shots of it!”

Coca-Cola Just Wants Us To Smile - The Wearable Movie by Ogilvy Mather Starring You

5 Aug 2013

Coca-Cola wanted to say thank you to those who make the world a little happier. Ogilvy & Mather, NY created The Wearable Movie - an interactive film that you not only watch but actually star in.

Each individual frame of the film was printed on a t-shirt, and sent around the world with a personalized thank you note. The recipients were asked to take a photo wearing the shirt and upload it to http://wearablemovie.com.

There, hundreds of frames were pieced together to create The Wearable Movie. It told the tale of two friends, and their dog, who do whatever it takes to create happiness and put a smile on a pair of lips.

This Is Not Charles Saatchi - "Playful Tiff" By Anonymous British Artist On Display In London

31 Jul 2013

Charles Saatchi has always been a proponent of controversial British art, but there is one particularly provocative artwork on the market that that he definitely won’t want in his collection.

A young British artist (who prefers to remain anonymous) has created a life-size model of Saatchi with a hand outstretched ready to choke anyone who cares to interact with the piece. The work is entitled ‘Playful Tiff’ - the words Charles Saatchi used to describe the infamous incident where he put his hand around his wife Nigella Lawson’s neck at Scott’s restaurant in London. Viewers of ‘Playful Tiff’ are invited to place their neck in Saatchi’s hand and capture the moment by taking a photo on their mobile phones.

In line with the devilish persona that Saatchi has adopted to promote his book ‘Be The Worst You Can Be’, the model is bright red and replete with horns.

The artwork is currently on display at the Jealous Gallery In Crouch End in London.

See This Artist Draw The Taste Of Jura 39 ¾ 40-Year Old Whisky

26 Jul 2013

Premium distiller Jura is teasing fans of its whisky with a new campaign showing an artist’s impression of people tasting a thirty-nine-and-three-quarter-year old whisky, ahead of its launch next year.

James Kirkham, Holler founding partner, said: “Our Jura activity is going to have a focus on breaking convention and not resorted to tried and tested category norms. This is a great first example of instant, smart, socially inspired promotions which ignite passion and get people talking.”

A video of the event is below, and tweeters of a legal drinking age are in with a chance to win a vial of The 39 ¾ by retweeting it.

Creative agency Holler is behind the online and experiential campaign, called ‘Visual Taste of 39 ¾s’, which had its beginnings at the Jura Whisky Festival, where attendees were given an exclusive chance to taste the special tipple.

Artist Robbie’s Brown Shoes, of the Puck Collective, was on hand to capture the reactions of the tasters and his creations are now being shown on Jura’s Facebook page, as well as distributed via Twitter.
