Toronto Ad Shop Creates A Twitter Powered #HomelessTurkey Campaign In An Effort To Feed Cities Homeless

10 Oct 2013

Toronto Ad agency BlackJet develops a Twitter hashtag powered turkey feeder to help feed our city's homeless this Thanksgiving.

For every 1000 tweets that include the hashtag #HomelessTurkey,
10 turkeys will be donated to Good Shepherd Ministries annual Thanksgiving meal.

Press:
TORONTO, ON (October 9, 2013) Blackjet Inc., a Toronto-based marketing agency,
launched today an innovative digital campaign to increase awareness for their client,
Good Shepherd, a food and service provider for the city’s homeless. The concept is
simple – every time someone includes #HomelessTurkey in a tweet, a small portion of
feed will be dispensed from a Blackjet custom-built and programmed hashtag-powered
feeder to three lucky turkeys that have been spared from their Thanksgiving fate. For
every 1000 tweets that includes the hashtag #HomelessTurkey before October 10, 10
turkeys will be donated to Good Shepherd’s annual Thanksgiving meal. The campaign
is a pro-bono initiative for the agency.

Blackjet’s custom turkey feeder is powered by a trough-auger, controlled via a USB
relay, which connects to a server that scours Twitter for all tweets containing the
hashtag #HomelessTurkey. When the hashtag is used, the server activates
the USB relay, which near-instantly feeds the turkeys.

Tweet a turkey and watch it eat live now at HomelessTurkey.com.

Blackjet enlisted Thunderclap to help amplify social reach and awareness, in turn
maximizing the number of turkeys to be donated to Good Shepherd. Thunderclap, a
social media crowdspeaking platform, will broadcast a message tomorrow from the
accounts of all #HomelessTurkey campaign supporters, reaching an additional 120,000
potential supporters at the exact same time.

Also beginning today is a three-day, on-site activation at the corner of Queen and Soho
Sts. in Toronto, where a live feed of the hashtag-fed turkeys (comfortable on a farm in
New Tecumseth, ON) will stream daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET. The live stream will
be accompanied by a street team who will educate passersby on the Good Shepherd’s
services for Toronto’s homeless.

Good Shepherd serves more than 1200 free meals to the homeless everyday, more
than any other organization in Toronto. Well known on the streets of Toronto as a place
to get a hot meal, clean clothes and a safe, clean bed for the night, Good Shepherd is a
leading provider of comprehensive services to homeless, disadvantaged and
marginalized people in the city.

Bier Markt celebrates 32 days of Oktoberfest with a Biervent Calendar

9 Oct 2013

Lay out your lederhosen. Toronto-based creative shop Open has launched a new campaign on behalf of Bier Markt, showing that when it comes to Oktoberfest, nobody does it better.

To highlight Bier Markt’s commitment to this beeriest of festivals, Open created a social media Biervent calendar – the Oktoberfest answer to the advent calendar. Housed on Bier Markt’s Facebook page, the Biervent calendar will countdown the 32 days of the festival with a billboard that features a new headline each day, such as “Rock Out With Your Sauerkraut” and “Bier and Lederhosen. So In Right Now.” The campaign also features OOH and TSA ads that reflect the Biervent calendar headlines.

All the creative elements pay homage to the authentic Oktoberfest experience that Bier Markt will be offering up to guests this year, which includes a bunch of cool events – such as a Snout Sunday Roast and the Bier and Lederhosen So In Right Now Event – and a mouthwatering menu of German-inspired fare. But, of course, it’s the beautiful bier that truly will be taking centre stage and Bier Markt has a sensational selection of German suds to tantalize patrons’ taste buds.

“This campaign is about showing that Bier Markt is the perfect place for you to go for an immersive and authentic Oktoberfest experience,” says Martin Beauvais, partner, Open. “It has the food, it has the fun and, most importantly, with over 150 brands it has enough suds to more than do justice to bier’s greatest event.”

“Whether they’re going to dine, or just to drink, what people are guaranteed to get at Bier Markt is an Oktoberfest celebration they won’t find anywhere else,” adds Christian Mathieu, partner, Open.

New Ad: Del Monte, Spencer - Take a Fruit Break

8 Oct 2013

Office antics abound in the latest from Toronto-based creative agency Blammo for Del Monte Refrigerated Fruit Cups.
Most people want to eat healthier. But most us also believe we don’t have time to eat the recommended amount of fruit - especially during a busy day at the office. The Del Monte “Take a Fruit Break” campaign aims to debunk that myth by pointing out that the time spent taking numerous breaks at work to drink coffee, gossip or go on Facebook - is time we could use to grab a fruit break, if we wanted.

The 30-second TV spot features “Spencer”, the lovable office slacker, and “Jane”, the consummate professional. Throughout the spot, we see Spencer’s hilarious breaks contrasted with Jane’s work grind. Ultimately, Jane finally takes a few minutes to relax and take a break of her own, a fruit break, with a Del Monte Refrigerated Fruit Cup.

The broadcast campaign is supported OOH which continues the office culture theme. The three ads feature simple statements about different types of breaks such as “If your colleagues have time for a coffee break, you have time for a fruit break” or “If your colleagues have time for a gossip break, you have time for a fruit break”.

Del Monte is a division of ConAgra Foods. The campaign is currently running in Calgary and Quebec.

Nabs | Ever had a nightmare boss in advertising?

Ever had a nightmare boss in advertising? Of course you have. Want to own them for a day? Of course you do. The latest from Toronto-based Zulu Alpha Kilo is a bitterly hilarious campaign for NABS. Enjoy.

Zulu Alpha Kilo invites you to seek revenge on your boss from hell in their latest campaign for NABS

October marks the third annual NABS Vintage Intern Auction. The event allows bidders to seek “revenge” on 12 notable executives and thought leaders, in an auction where all proceeds go to NABS, charitable group in Canada set up exclusively to provide assistance to people in the communications and related industries who may need help due to illness, injury, unemployment or financial difficulties.

The auction, now in its third year, was developed by Toronto-based creative agency Zulu Alpha Kilo, who once again created this year's integrated campaign.

"The campaign taps into the insight that you don't get to the top without ruffling a few feathers along the way. We were fortunate that all of this year's interns were great sports and could laugh at themselves a little," adds Zak Mroueh, Chief Creative Officer & CEO at Zulu Alpha Kilo.

Some of the greatest minds in Canadian marketing and advertising will be auctioned off to serve as one day, unpaid, interns with top companies and organizations. All proceeds go to help the 1300 families supported by NABS in 2013. The auction runs the full month of October.

Bidders can assign interns to write a strategy, give a speech, hold a seminar, clean up the kitchen, consult, get coffee, even lead an employee hike. Minimum bid is $2000.00.

“As this program expands, we are finding the industry's top leaders and talent are eager to volunteer as interns.” said NABS Executive Director Jim Warrington. “This fundraiser has become an annual highlight, and the humour around this year’s revenge theme is hard to beat.”

This year's campaign includes a bidding microsite, Zoom posters and an edgy video directed by Neil Tardio of Partners Film. Photographer Matt Barnes donated his services, as did Thinkingbox, Pirate, Daniel Ries at Panic & Bob, Powerhouse Casting, and Westside Studio.

Here the "interns" that are up for bids:

New York Fries has launched an all new, quality hot dog called the 'Premium Dog.' And like any other luxury brand item, you have to look out for the knockoffs.

“New York Fries is a very courageous client,” said Barry Quinn, executive creative director at Toronto ad agency Juniper Park.

“They had an interesting problem to solve: they’ve been selling hotdogs for 25 years, and now they have re-formulated them. They took something like a French fry and elevated it, and want people to expect more when they get a dog.”

Vancouver Police Launch #stupidcombos: Texting and Driving Poster Campaign

18 Sept 2013

Using mobile devices while driving contributes to nearly a third of traffic deaths and injuries each year in Canada; however, people still don’t view texting and driving as the lethal combination that it is. New creative by DDB Canada’s Vancouver office for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) uses humour to cut through the typical serious and somber messaging by comparing texting and driving to other equally stupid and dangerous combinations.

A series of posters and thousands of postcards are being handed out at Vancouver high schools, encouraging students to share other stupid combinations through social channels tagged with #stupidcombos. Students are also encouraged to draw stupid combinations and share them on their social channels to enter into the contest. The VPD’s social media division will be consolidating all of the entries and a committee will select their top five combinations. The five shortlisted entries will be shared on the VPD's Facebook page and the public will be encouraged to vote for their favorite. The #stupidcombo that receives the most votes will be deemed the winner with the recipient winning a police ride-along experience.

Cundari Supports TEDxToronto With This Wonderful Story Worth Sharing "The Chalkboard"

11 Sept 2013

CUNDARI SUPPORTS TEDXTORONTO WITH A STORY WORTH SHARING

Press: As a proud supporter of TEDxToronto, Cundari has produced a video entitled The Chalkboard.

To demonstrate how a great idea can have a lasting impact, Cundari decided to document the story of how a Torontonian changed his neighbourhood with one simple gesture. Ayden Byle, upon moving into Toronto’s Cedarvale area, began writing daily messages on a chalkboard that he displayed in his front window. Soon after, cars slowed down in front of his house, parents walking their kids to school stopped to look, and just about everyone else made an effort to see Byle’s daily messages. The impact was clear by the reactions and responses of the neighbours.

“This video, put together by Cundari, showcases the commitment of TEDxToronto sponsors sharing ideas worth spreading,” said Melody Khodaverdian, Director of Partnerships for TEDxToronto. “Our conference each year is about bringing a story, a new way of thinking, to our audience, and this video captures that.”

The 5th annual TEDxToronto conference is taking place on September 26th at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and it will feature speakers and performances rooted in the theme “The Choices We Make.” For more information on the conference, visit TEDxToronto.com.

“From the position of the alignment of philosophies there couldn’t be a better fit for us,” said Andrew Simon, Chief Creative Officer at Cundari. “Supporting the notion of sharing ideas that can create change and encourage innovation is something we at Cundari strive for every day and to be a supporter of TEDxToronto, an organization who’s focus is just that, well, it’s pretty fantastic.”

Cundari worked with Toronto-based BizMedia digital video agency to produce The Chalkboard.

There's Something in Your Tweet, Toronto's Union Creative Brilliant Twitter-Based Ad Campaign for Colgate

Toronto's UNION Creative and Colgate-Palmolive have launched a Twitter-based campaign called, "There's Something In Your Tweet," to support the introduction of the new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush in Canada. The campaign includes a first-of-its-kind service that puts Twitter to a completely new use: anonymously alerting people to food stuck in their teeth, sparing friends the embarrassment of pointing it out themselves. The message draws attention to the Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush’s 17x slimmer tip† tapered bristles which provides 6x deeper reach‡ to help remove stuck food between teeth. Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrushes also have 35% more bristles than an ordinary toothbrush that provide a unique mouth feel while brushing.

"Having food stuck in your teeth is so embarrassing," Lance Martin, Partner and Executive Creative Director at UNION says, "but it's only half of the embarrassment equation. Having to tell someone they've got a huge piece of spinach stuck can be pretty awful too. To avoid embarrassment for everyone, the Colgate SlimSoft brush helps take care of the food and the There’s Something In Your Tweet campaign takes care of pointing it out."

A National Politeness Survey conducted for Colgate-Palmolive by Ipsos confirms this, with more people wanting to know about food stuck in their teeth than willing to tell others about it.

“This campaign is a fun and relevant way for Colgate to interact with consumers while driving awareness for our new Colgate Slim Soft toothbrush innovation,” says Samantha Boulukos, Vice President of Marketing at Colgate-Palmolive Canada Inc.
The service allows users to enter someone's Twitter handle or email address and select from a variety of options ranging from popcorn to "super-healthy kale" for what's stuck. A message is composed and sent and both sender and recipient receive a $1-off coupon for a new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush.
To complement the service, the campaign also includes media appearances by Anna Post, etiquette expert and great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, online banners, and postings in restaurant washrooms, where embarrassed Twitter users can secretly alert their tablemates. A booth at the film festival IT Lounge Portrait Studio will give visiting celebrities a new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush to keep their smiles red carpet-ready.

The MINI Roller Coaster, A NOT so NORMAL campaign for MINI via Anomaly

26 Aug 2013

MINI is much more than just a car. It has its own distinctive personality and generates emotion, passion, and excitement from its loyal owners and fanatics (AKA “MINIACS”). In May 2013, with the help of their AOR Anomaly, MINI Canada launched their nationwide NOT NORMAL campaign that reinforces MINI’s unique and “only MINI can do” attitude.

To amplify the NOT NORMAL campaign and MINI’s undisputed go-kart handling, MINI Canada and Anomaly took directly to the streets. Through vigorous planning and with the help of Toronto-based production company Asymetric, three MINI Cooper S models were completely retrofitted to create a MINI Roller Coaster. The fabrication included the removal of the rear seats and parts of the roof, welding on new roller coaster frames, external speakers, custom roller coaster carts, bright and ambient LEDs, custom paint/decals, and wind blowers, which really showcased the hair-raising experience of driving a MINI even while stopped at traffic lights. With all the structural changes to the car, performance tests to ensure safety were conducted at the MINI Test Facility in collaboration with stunt driver coordinator Philippe Létourneau.

Once the MINI Roller Coaster was street ready, 3 professional drivers ripped through downtown Toronto with 2 riders on each car screaming at the top of their lungs. In addition to the ear piercing screams, a custom music track created by Didier Tovel from SNDWRX blasted through the exterior speaker system. The reaction? Torontonians laughing, smiling, and whipping out their phones and cameras to capture true excitement and the NOT NORMAL execution.

"The stunt was truly an unconventional and NOT NORMAL way to communicate the brand core of excitement.” Said Dave Douglass, Partner/ECD Anomaly. “We hope people take away that driving a MINI is an absolutely thrilling experience and its “corners like it’s on rails” abilities are completely unlike any other car.”

Capital C Goes Back To School In New Toshiba Ad Campaign

13 Aug 2013

There's chickens, black light grossness and an cornical math notes in Capital C's latest for Toshiba directed by Aleysa Young of Untitled Films and edited by Marco Pazzano, Panic & Bob. Capital C has tapped into dorm life to launch a new online ad campaign for Toshiba laptops, desktops and tablets.
Consisting of 3 videos, display ads and a Facebook contest, the campaign is aimed at young adults that are outfitting themselves for the upcoming year. The videos show the utility of Toshiba products and how they make campus life easier. In one commercial, for example, it shows how Toshiba’s All-in-One desktop with gesture control can come to the rescue when you’ve been plastic wrapped to your bed in a dorm room filled with live chickens.

“We wanted to showcase the innovative features of Toshiba products in a way that would really resonate with our audience,” says Sherry Lyons, VP Corporate and Marketing Communications at Toshiba of Canada Limited. “Humour is great way to educate and entertain viewers at the same time.”

Another video finds two students checking out their new dorm room CSI-style with a USB-powered black light - promoting the Toshiba Satellite P-series laptop’s ability to power and charge USB devices even when the laptop is closed.

The final commercial shows how the Toshiba Excite Write tablet has the ability to convert handwriting and drawings into notes you can save and share when one student inadvertently sends his roommate a sketch of him posing heroically as a muscular centaur.

“We really tried to capture insights about life on campus. Like how disgusting a dorm could actually be or how well do you really know the guy you’re rooming with,” comments Gary Watson, Executive Creative Director, Capital C. “We focused on the product itself and built storylines around those features. It just so happened that they inspired some fun thinking.”

The videos were directed by Aleysa Young of Untitled Films and edited by Marco Pazzano of Panic & Bob, both who were chosen for their experience working on youth-oriented brands with a comedic slant.

Complementing the online videos is a Facebook contest where people can not only win the Toshiba products featured in the videos but gag gifts inspired by the campaign. “We really wanted to make sure the social initiative felt like it was coming from the same place, with the same sensibility,” adds Gary Watson. “So, not only can you win the products in the ads, you can also win a USB-powered black light and rubber chickens.”

Meet Wanderus, Connecticus & Relaxicus In Samsung's "What's Your Tabitat?" New Ad Campaign

8 Aug 2013

Great new work from the creative agency Cheil for the new Samsung "What's Your Tabitat?" campaign. Three ads make up the campaign for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 line up: "Wanderus" (above) - known for their constant motion; totally at home even when they aren't, below "Relaxicus" - the unapologetic home dweller; a kick back couch-snuggler, and "Connecticus" - Who is tribal by nature; incredibly connected and inherently social.

The spots were produced by Toronto based production company six01, a relatively new studio that has grown from a foundation in visual effects and motion graphics work to take on full, large scale, live-action productions. "Produced in three weeks for Cheil Canada, this marks an important step for us towards larger scale, live-action productions", says six01 on it's blog. "We're excited to add this capacity to our services while maintaining a strong visual effects and motion graphics portfolio".

Support The VPD and Looking Good Doing It - 2 Fun New Ads via DDB for the Vancouver Police Foundation

Sporting New Eyewear Supports The Police
DDB Canada launches arresting campaign for the Vancouver Police Foundation

Vancouver, August 6, 2013 -- Recently, the Vancouver Police Foundation launched its first communications campaign aimed to increase awareness and garner support for the charitable organization. The Vancouver Police Foundation provides funding for emerging technology and innovative ideas as well as a wide range of community policing and youth-at-risk outreach programs not included in the police department’s annual operating budget.

Developed by DDB Canada’s Vancouver office, the goal of the integrated campaign is to raise awareness for the Vancouver Police Foundation and better connect the public to the police via a line of iconic, mirrored aviator sunglasses. These sunglasses not only serve as a visual symbol of support that Vancouverites can wear proudly, but they also play a central role to all of the creative aspects within this campaign.

“The iconic sunglasses pay homage to a signature look inherently tied to police and act as a badge of support that buyers can wear,” says Cosmo Campbell, executive creative director, DDB Canada. “This becomes an opportunity and conversation piece for Vancouverites to demonstrate their support for the police and look good doing it.”

The sunglasses play a primary role in two 30-second television spots, titled “Hoodslide” and “Deflated,” which kicks off the campaign and aims to drive sales of the sunglasses. Taking a humourous twist to popular TV police dramas, both spots drive viewers to buy the sunglasses in support of the Vancouver Police Foundation and visit the website to find out more about the organization and how proceeds benefit the community.

“In the short term, the goal of the campaign is simply to raise awareness for the Vancouver Police Foundation and show support for the VPD by wearing the sunglasses,” says Martina Meckova, executive director, Vancouver Police Foundation. “Our long term objective is to increase the membership of the Foundation and broaden the support base, so that more people in Vancouver can benefit from the work that we do in the community.”

A social media contest coincides with the campaign launch and invites people to submit photos of themselves wearing the sunglasses, along with the hashtag #VPDPartners for a chance to win a unique Ride-Along police experience. Symbolizing the solidarity between the people of the city and the Vancouver Police Department, the photos from the contest will be aggregated on the Department’s website as a visual tribute to the police officers.

“Initially, we asked DDB to assist us with some print ads to promote the Vancouver Police Foundation in a local paper,” says Peter Brown, chair, Vancouver Police Foundation. “The agency returned with an impactful campaign strategy that lends itself successfully across various mediums, allowing us to build a stronger relationship with the public.”

Print, OOH, television, social, digital, public relations and an on-air partnership with Global TV BC round out this integrated PSA campaign. The campaign was created pro bono by DDB Canada with generous support from the following production partners: Clinton Hussey for Photography, OPC // Family Style’s Director Jeff Low for the TV work, Post Pro Media for post-production services, Sean Milliken for talent casting, Wave Productions for audio services and Coastal Contacts for facilitating the production of the sunglasses.

The campaign also received help from DDB Canada’s media agency partner, OMD, who offered free services by arranging a combination of donated and discounted PSA buys with BC Business, Bell Media, CBS Outdoor, and Global TV, Postmedia, TV Week and Western Media Group.

The iconic, mirrored aviator sunglasses will be distributed by the police at community events, including Vancouver’s Fresh Air Outdoor Cinema, and are available for purchase starting August 1 from the Vancouver Police Foundation website for $20 each.

“The partnership between the community and police is fundamental to crime prevention and reduction efforts,” Brown adds. “It is through the Foundation that the citizens of Vancouver can support essential policing programs that may be beyond the immediate city budget capability, raise awareness of the outstanding contributions the VPD makes 24/7, and become partners in policing so together we can build stronger communities and make Vancouver the safest major city in Canada.”
