Vancouver Police Launch #stupidcombos: Texting and Driving Poster Campaign

18 Sept 2013

Using mobile devices while driving contributes to nearly a third of traffic deaths and injuries each year in Canada; however, people still don’t view texting and driving as the lethal combination that it is. New creative by DDB Canada’s Vancouver office for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) uses humour to cut through the typical serious and somber messaging by comparing texting and driving to other equally stupid and dangerous combinations.

A series of posters and thousands of postcards are being handed out at Vancouver high schools, encouraging students to share other stupid combinations through social channels tagged with #stupidcombos. Students are also encouraged to draw stupid combinations and share them on their social channels to enter into the contest. The VPD’s social media division will be consolidating all of the entries and a committee will select their top five combinations. The five shortlisted entries will be shared on the VPD's Facebook page and the public will be encouraged to vote for their favorite. The #stupidcombo that receives the most votes will be deemed the winner with the recipient winning a police ride-along experience.

There's Something in Your Tweet, Toronto's Union Creative Brilliant Twitter-Based Ad Campaign for Colgate

11 Sept 2013

Toronto's UNION Creative and Colgate-Palmolive have launched a Twitter-based campaign called, "There's Something In Your Tweet," to support the introduction of the new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush in Canada. The campaign includes a first-of-its-kind service that puts Twitter to a completely new use: anonymously alerting people to food stuck in their teeth, sparing friends the embarrassment of pointing it out themselves. The message draws attention to the Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush’s 17x slimmer tip† tapered bristles which provides 6x deeper reach‡ to help remove stuck food between teeth. Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrushes also have 35% more bristles than an ordinary toothbrush that provide a unique mouth feel while brushing.

"Having food stuck in your teeth is so embarrassing," Lance Martin, Partner and Executive Creative Director at UNION says, "but it's only half of the embarrassment equation. Having to tell someone they've got a huge piece of spinach stuck can be pretty awful too. To avoid embarrassment for everyone, the Colgate SlimSoft brush helps take care of the food and the There’s Something In Your Tweet campaign takes care of pointing it out."

A National Politeness Survey conducted for Colgate-Palmolive by Ipsos confirms this, with more people wanting to know about food stuck in their teeth than willing to tell others about it.

“This campaign is a fun and relevant way for Colgate to interact with consumers while driving awareness for our new Colgate Slim Soft toothbrush innovation,” says Samantha Boulukos, Vice President of Marketing at Colgate-Palmolive Canada Inc.
The service allows users to enter someone's Twitter handle or email address and select from a variety of options ranging from popcorn to "super-healthy kale" for what's stuck. A message is composed and sent and both sender and recipient receive a $1-off coupon for a new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush.
To complement the service, the campaign also includes media appearances by Anna Post, etiquette expert and great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, online banners, and postings in restaurant washrooms, where embarrassed Twitter users can secretly alert their tablemates. A booth at the film festival IT Lounge Portrait Studio will give visiting celebrities a new Colgate* Slim SoftTM/MC toothbrush to keep their smiles red carpet-ready.

Roxy Goes Social with Global User-Generated “Dare Yourself” Campaign

12 Aug 2013

Roxy, the world’s leading women’s lifestyle company, partnered with Digital Brand Architects and ClickFire Media to ask girls around the world: are you living life to the fullest? To extend this question to Roxy’s worldwide fan base, the boutique agency and digital design studio combined their expertise to create “Dare Yourself,” a social media campaign that challenged women to push their limits and empower themselves.

The “Dare Yourself” initiative challenged customers and fans of the Roxy brand to measure their exciting lifestyles against other women across a range of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube. Contestants participated by submitting a 150-word response along with three photos or a one-minute video demonstrating how they “Dare Themselves” every day. By entering, five women between the ages of 18-28 got a chance to win a trip of a lifetime. Additionally, contestants continue to interact with the brand via the #ROXYDARES Photo Challenge, an Instagram based gallery that invites women to submit photos of themselves completing weekly challenges.

To all the ROXY girls who Dare Themselves. This is for YOU!

The global campaign, which went live simultaneously in over 40 countries and 11 different languages, received 2,500 entries and collected some 245,887 “Likes” on Facebook, bringing the total to more than 2,879,000 to date. On Twitter, the #DAREYOURSELF hashtag earned an impressive 1.6M impressions while over 6,357 users shared their submissions via the #ROXYDARES Photo Challenge on Instagram, generating over 686,000 impressions.

As part of a growing trend of user-generated campaigns, “Dare Yourself” succeeded largely through the collaboration between DBA, ClickFire Media and the Roxy brand, which generated an online strategy that engaged fans with a positive message. Digital Brand Architects collaborated closely with Roxy on the aggressive influencer outreach effort, brokering partnerships with targeted media and bloggers – including Wavelength Surf Magazine, The Contrast Magazine, among many others – to secure exposure and engagement for the campaign among targeted audiences. This strategic prowess is matched only by the campaign’s technical underpinnings. ClickFire Media’s team of technologists and developers constructed a multi-lingual Facebook experience that coordinates user uploads, submissions, and voting through a custom-made content-management system. The Facebook experience also featured a dynamic photo gallery that pulls from the ever-growing collection of #ROXYDARES-tagged photos on Instagram, and an interactive map that used Google API to track submissions from Roxy girls across the world.

The new campaign is a logical follow-up to Roxy’s wildly successful 2012 ‘Let the Sea Set You Free’ campaign. “‘Let The Sea Set You Free’ campaign proved Roxy’s fans are not only fun-loving, adventurous, and epitomizing everything the brand stands for, but were also eager to engage and share their own content with the Roxy community,” explained Digital Brand Architect’s Annabelle Smith.

ZOOSK | From The Heart & Dating Advice

22 Jul 2013

You’ve got questions. Heart Friend has answers. Who’s the go-to for relationship and dating advice? Heart Friend of course. He’s the love guru. He’s been there and done that. He’s got all the answers to all of your questions. All the time.

For the first time, Zoosk is celebrating their fans with “Zoosk Presents: From the Heart,” a social campaign that puts the fans in the spotlight.

On Facebook they prompted it's community to pose questions to Heart Friend by simply replying on the Facebook wall.

They selected the best fan submitted posts and Heart Friend answered them in a series of video responses. Each selected question is featured in the video responses and the fan is called out by name by the Heart character. Of course, this is not your grandmother's dating advice.

The campaign runs for 6 weeks with a new question answered each Sunday night on the Zoosk Facebook page, and Youtube.

Zoosk began its YouTube-only video push just this year. In one ad, a sassy red heart plush pal tries to convince Liz to check out guys on the dating site who fit her description of a dreamy mountain man. Some campaign executions have gone viral, with one ad reaching more than 14 million YouTube views.

Leo Messi Helps His Mom Soothe His Baby From Crying In New WeChat Commercial

18 Jul 2013

Stardust acted as the fully integrated creative agency + production arm, from concept through final distribution, for a new campaign for China's wildly popular messaging app WeChat. The app is expanding its global reach, kicking off an international ad campaign this month, featuring soccer superstar Lionel Messi.

Both spots have a fatherhood theme. In the first, Messi is shown trading voice messages (in Spanish) with Grandma, who is trying to soothe his crying infant son. He gets the baby to laugh by -- surprise! -- performing soccer juggling tricks shown to the baby via WeChat's video chat function. The video posted on YouTube by WeChat India netted more than 1.7 million views after just one week.

The global campaign targets 15 markets, including Argentina and Spain where Mr. Messi is a superstar. The others are: Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. In addition to being posted on YouTube, the two spots will air on television in the 15 markets. There will be accompanying print and outdoor advertising in at least some markets.

“Our goal was to show Messi in relatable, down-to-earth scenarios so our audience could easily identify with him and his use of the product; versus building the more common, larger-than-life concept around him that only puts distance between him, the product and the consumer base," Stardust Co-Owner/Managing Partner Dexton Deboree said in a statement provided by Tencent. “The opportunity for Stardust was one that really allowed Stardust to rely on our unique strengths to tackle a large brand’s challenge. We worked hand-in-hand with the team at Tencent and WeChat to concept a campaign that would work for launching their product to a large number of new countries, around the globe, while utilizing some consistencies between other non-US campaigns they had done in other markets, all within a single campaign, all within very tight logistics in both the execution and deployment.”

“We were intimately involved from beginning to end. Both cultural and time zone challenges presented hurdles we don't usually have to jump. In this case, I think it is the versatility of the Stardust team that allowed us to work across 3 time zones seamlessly,” added Stardust Co-Owner and ECD Seth Epstein.

WeChat already has more than 300 million registered user accounts, including 70 million outside China, mostly in Asian markets. WeChat started as a messaging app similar to WhatsApp, but the addition of video calls, photo sharing, location-based services and other Social features also make it similar to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Skype. WeChat's popularity outside of China has soared recently, growing by 20 million registered user accounts to reach 70 million in only six weeks. The growth is attributed to promotional campaigns, special WeChat deals provided through some Asian telco operators, and the increasing number of smartphone users in target markets. WeChat has not officially launched in the U.S., though Tencent has an American office doing groundwork and studying the market.

Johannesburg Zoo’s Tweeting Honey Badger A World First

3 Jul 2013

Looking for an ingenious way to build their online presence, the Johannesburg Zoo has decided to hand over all their Social Media management to ‘someone’ who knows the zoo inside out. BG the Badger! The Johannesburg Zoo’s much-loved resident honey badger and the official JHB Zoo mascot.

How is this even possible?
Well, it’s largely due to BG’s new high-tech animal enclosure, cleverly devised by award-winning digital agency Hellocomputer, of the Draftfcb group. Creatives on the job include Candice Hellens (copywriter), Eras Gous (art-director) Moira-Gene Sephton Gous (art-director) and Rory MacRobert (copywriter), and the technology was implemented by tech wizard Tom van den Bon (at BinarySpace) along with Johan Pieterse, Nathan O' Gates and Ben Fourie of Hellocomputer.

Selected because of his cheeky-yet-lovable personality, love of people and his very active nature, BG began tweeting on June 14 this year. You can follow him at @zootweetslive.

The Technology:
BG’s high-tech badger enclosure is rigged with wireless infrared motion sensors, which are divided into six zones. The animal-friendly sensors talk to a server that holds a database of hundreds of pre-written BG tweets. As BG moves from zone to zone, the motion sensors pick up on his location and automatically trigger tweets from his Twitter account, in real-time. The built-from-scratch coding ensures that all the tweets are relevant to what BG is doing at that moment e.g. if BG is at the front section of his enclosure he will trigger people-related tweets, when he is near the sides he will trigger neighbour-related tweets and so on.

“The techno-wizards from Hellocomputer are thrilled by the project and the team at the JHB Zoo are amped to have turned BG into – in record time – what they believe is the world’s first LIVE tweeting zoo ‘spokesanimal’”, said Kerry Friend, executive creative director of Hellocomputer.

“The Joburg Zoo does a wonderful job connecting with animal fans using many different traditional media, but it has steered away from the digital realm until now. Having acknowledged the many benefits of engaging with its target base using social media, it wanted an especially appealing way of doing so.”

“Hellocomputer’s logic was that, since the thing that people really love about the Zoo is its animals, it makes sense for an animal to be their spokesperson”.

“The job has fallen on BG’s shoulders right now but there are plenty of interesting candidates, ones who are on the extinction list and who could become ‘spokesanimals’ for their species as well. Who knows what the future will bring,” she said.

“Critical to the zoo’s acceptance of the concept and the system is BG’s safety”, said Johannesburg Zoo’s Brand & Communications Manager, Letta Madlala.

“While we were immediately enchanted by Hellocomputer’s innovative proposal to turn one of our most social animals into a social media spokesperson, we stressed that we could not put BG at risk at all”.

“The system designed by Hellocomputer utilises wireless sensors, so there’s nothing for BG to chew on, choke on or entangle himself in. They are also small and unobtrusive, and have been attached at the highest points of the enclosure, while the base station and its solar power source, which are more difficult to ruggedise, have been placed outside the enclosure.

“The sensors are also enclosed in hard-to-penetrate Perspex so, if BG does manage to get his claws on one – and let’s face it, honey badgers are resourceful and very strong creatures – he will not be able to penetrate it in the short term and it can be retrieved by zoo staff”.

“While several of BG’s tweets will address his daily activities – such as his walks around the zoo (which he adorably takes on a lead), his mealtimes and playtimes, comments on his human visitors and animal neighbours and badger philosophies–he will obviously also be able to promote special events at the zoo and, when relevant, comment on current events”.

“We are thrilled with the results and look forward to many of our supporters and the public engaging with BG on a regular basis,” she said. “He’s a very friendly badger, we’re sure he’ll be very popular on twitter.”

While Hellocomputer has written several rules to govern BG’s tweets limiting the number of tweets a day and an hour or the number of tweets triggered from one station, its server will log BG’s exact movements as they trigger the sensors.

Additionally, all this valuable data will be retained and made available to the zoo should it have a need to research or contribute to research being done on badger habit studies and/or studies on animals in captivity.

“Not only does this system provide the Joburg Zoo with an exciting and totally apt way of communicating with its target audiences through social media, it has the potential to contribute to mankind’s understanding of animal behaviour and - by extrapolation - animal well-being in the future. We couldn’t be prouder,” concluded Kerry Friend.

New Ad - This Is MySpace

13 Jun 2013

The first ad for the new MySpace simply entitled "This Is MySpace"...can a $20 million ad campaign help give the social network a fighting chance, time will tell.

We really wanted to really represent the people that make this brand, Christian Parkes, head of marketing at Myspace told AdWeek. "Because it's not us in this room—we're the guys behind the scenes. But it's really about the community. The tone and spirit ... it's irreverent, slightly anarchistic, that's the tone and the attitude and the feeling.

Ceres Beer - Italian #ivoteanyway Campaign

8 May 2013

Ceres is quite a strong beer and in Italy it is a brand for a young target audience. Politicians also aim for a young audience, but Italian youth consider them the most aged, corrupted and incapable in Europe.

The challenge: Prove that the young Italians, even if they love a strong beer, are more responsible than those who represent them.

The opportunity: Elections are getting close and everybody feels that the tables are going to turn. But an absurd bureaucratic obstacle stops thousands of Italians studying abroad from voting.

The goal: Ceres Beer will bring the students' problem to the attention of everyone.
The strategy: The young Italians abroad are the real heroes, and the will vote anyway.

Execution: We organize symbolic elections in major European cities.
Outcome: The cause of the students achieves unprecedented visibility across all media. Ceres gains invaluable awareness and becomes the most cited brand during the election weekend.

Results: Thousands of students from 26 European cities joined the initiative. The protest achieved unprecedented visibility on all the national media: TV, newspapers magazines, radios, social media, news website and blogs. The operation opened a debate all around the country. #ivoteanyway became a tweet trend with more than 10.000 tweets in 10 days.

For the brand: Brand search frequency on google: +470% in 10 days. Ceres was the most cited brand during the election week. People reached: 20 millions, one third of the italian population. Media investment: less than € 5,000.

The World's First InstaGram Film Experience

25 Mar 2013

Toronto advertising agency Cossette uses Instagram to simulate a classic film effect in innovative Silent Film Festival promotion. There are three trailers on Toronto Silent Film Festival’s Instagram accounts - @tsff_1, @tsff_2, and @tsff_3. You can get an idea of the experience in the case study video above, but you should really check them out on Instagram.

Developed by Cossette in Toronto, the Instagram account uses the slideshow view mode within the popular mobile app to simulate a classic film effect, giving filmgoers a handheld example of a classic silent film. In fact, the logic of the slideshow is the same basic premise that was used in the discovery of the film medium in its infancy.

"Everyone knows that showing clips of a film can drum up interest." says Cossette Co-Chief Creative Officer Matt Litzinger. "We wanted to create a sort of “trailer” of our own, and thought this new and unique use of Instagram could bring the films to life and draw attention to the festival. It feels appropriate to be using a technology like Instagram to promote the silent film technique, which in its day was every bit as ground-breaking and innovative as digital platforms are today." The Toronto Silent Film Festival runs from April 4th to 9th.
