DDB Tribal's eye candy of a spot for German based Deutsche Telekom

23 Sept 2013

MPC LA Goes Abstract for Deutsche Telekom
When German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom wanted to tell a story of the increasing interconnectivity of the modern world, they chose an unconventional approach: rather than tell this tale literally, they followed the advice of German agency DDB Tribal and Director Carl Erik Rinsch to convey it as a visual metaphor representing the body, nature and the universe. Rinsch, in turn, turned to MPC LA, confident that the studio could create the spot’s tone and style and execute roughly 35 seconds of pure CG animation in just one month.

The result is a spot of rippling beauty, with a colorful web of energy spreading across the earth, morphing into vast city skylines and then people. Working from references provided by the director, MPC 3D Supervisor Dan Marsh and Concept Artist Casey McIntyre created this spectacle using Houdini and custom procedurals to echo patterns in nature and render hundreds of millions of particles.

The studio simultaneously previsualized the storyboards to explore composition, animation timing, and camera movement. They imported Maya animations into Houdini to create procedural animations and lighting effects. Head of 3D Andy Boyd – who has worked with the director in the past – and Marsh oversaw a team of animators and lighters, while 2D Supervisor Jake Montgomery completed the look in compositing and enhanced it in Flame. MPC LA Colorist Derek Hansen performed color duties for the live action portion of the spot.

“On a one-month production schedule, creating :35 seconds of material from scratch required a focused collaboration,” Marsh said of the team effort. “It was important to set the look in our concept work so that the CG team had a real visual goal to reach given the spot’s abstract look. With everything being full CG, we had a lot of room for creative freedom. Everyone nailed their jobs, and we ended up with a highly original, engrossing spot.”

Volvo Trucks, The Hamster Stunt (Live Test 2)

“I know it’s hard to believe a hamster could drive a truck, but Charlie the hamster did it. What you see in the film is the real thing’’ says Lars Terling, Vice President Marketing Communications, Volvo Trucks.

PRESS: Exactly a year after launching viral film ‘The Ballerina Stunt’, Volvo Trucks is back with a series of new stunts. Last week Volvo Trucks released teaser-video ‘The Hook’, which has already claimed over 2 million views on YouTube. Today premiers the next daring film: ‘The Hamster Stunt’.

The film features Charlie, a tiny hamster, steering a Volvo FMX construction truck up and out of a hazardous quarry – demonstrating how easy it is to manoeuvre the 15-tonne construction truck.

“We were highly sceptical to begin with, but at the same time we could see it was a fun way to show how easy it is to steer with Volvo Dynamic Steering’’ says Lars Terling.

Charlie was chosen in a careful casting procedure and had undergone several weeks of training prior to the test. The supporting role is played by precision driver Seon Rogers, who has his feet on the pedals and a carrot to keep Charlie from driving them over the edge.

“It was a big challenge. The driver had to hold the carrot in just the right way so he could lead the hamster. If he held it too high or too low Charlie would lose interest,” explains animal trainer Grace Dickinson

The film was shot in a closed-off quarry at Los Tres Cunados, Spain, and was directed by Jamie Rafn, known for his one-take spot ‘Walk’. #TheHamsterStunt is part of a live-test strategy to dramatise the technical innovations of Volvo Trucks.

Volvo Trucks - "The Hook" Sacrifices Their President for a PR Stunt

2 Sept 2013

It’s been a long time coming, but today Volvo Trucks is back with ‘The Hook’ – the first in a series of videos to come from Volvo Trucks. This campaign is the continuation of amazing video-stunts from Volvo Trucks, as they once again put their trucks to never-before-seen-tests. Be On is proud to present this teaser video, and soon we will be bringing you more great content from Volvo Trucks.

Imagine a 15 tonne Volvo Truck dangling from its own towing hook, 20 meters above the water in Gothenburg harbor, Sweden. Then imagine standing on top of it.

This is the hook of the most recent video stunt from Volvo Trucks, staring the company President, Claes Nilsson as stuntman. Normally, heads of major companies stay behind their desks but not this one. Volvo Trucks wanted to put their newest construction truck to the ultimate test. And what better way to test the truck’s robustness, than to have the truck hoisted more than 20 meters up in the air and then stand on the front panel?

“Well, I have to admit I had butterflies in my tummy before the event. I’m no mountain-climber and I don’t like heights. But I’d promised to do the stunt so I couldn’t very well back out,” says Claes Nilsson.

This intense feature was shot from a helicopter and everything had been prepared in advance down to the tiniest detail.

“The idea behind the film – called ‘The Hook’ – is that we wanted to show that the truck’s front towing hook is dimensioned to handle far greater stresses than those to which it is normally subjected. It’s all about spotlighting the strength and quality of our construction trucks. And you can’t do that more clearly than by hoisting the 15 tonne truck up into the air via its own towing hook,” explains Claes Nilsson.

#TheHook is the first in a series of new, stunning and daring video stunts that will showcase the performance of Volvo Trucks’ models in ways never seen before. And Volvo Trucks knows how to make stunning stunts.

The viral video fans of the world will be reminded of ‘The Ballerina Stunt’ which was a spectacular viral success last year. In the film, record-holding highliner Faith Dickey battled to cross the line between two trucks driving at full speed.

Claes Nilsson reveals that there is much more to come from Volvo Trucks. He assures that the stunts coming this autumn are not any run-of-the-mill tests. These tests will show things that nobody in the truck world has ever done before! So stay tuned, you don’t want to miss this out.

Shut Up & Shoot - New Ad by TheQ Features Run Run by the Rival

29 Aug 2013

To get the most out of life, you have to embrace the new.
There are new places, and new people. New experiences, and new feelings. New highs...and new lows. But it's always worth giving it a shot. After all, if we never did anything out of the ordinary, then no one would have any stories to tell. We wouldn't be able to make moments special. Memories wouldn't be worth sharing. So, it's a good thing we can make the ordinary extraordinary. Because if you don't limit your expectations, you'll find that there's no end to the possibilities. You can do the unexpected. You can go the extra mile. You can live in the moment.
So give it a shot. Shoot for the sky. Shoot for the stars.
Just shut up and shoot.

Goodyear - Tires "The Wet Grip Experience"

24 Aug 2013

Tire company Goodyear launches its new summer tire EfficientGrip Performance with an unusual marketing idea. The paddlewheel of Hamburg's famous steamboat "Louisiana Star" was covered with a special design that transforms it into an almost 7 meter high tire. The paddle wheel-tire was seen in the Port of Hamburg and on the river Elbe.
The giant paddle wheel-tire in Hamburg was created by German advertising agency Leo Burnett.

Since 1999 the luxury liner is one of the major attractions in the Port of Hamburg. To the huge number of visitors, its paddlewheel communicates instantly that the Efficient Grip Performance offers the perfect grip when wet. The printed air duct sheet, which is mounted on the paddle wheel, is car-wash-resistant. It covers 100 m2 of Alucobond-panels. The whole construction design weighs 400 kg. Its surface has a diameter of nearly seven meters, which means it has the height of a multi-story house.

The giant paddle wheel-tire in Hamburg was created by German advertising agency Leo Burnett. The Frankfurt based agency also developed the new Goodyear campaign. The claim "Made to feel good" addresses the consumer in a more emotional way. "This
unusual advertising platform complements our classic print campaign we designed for the new product," says Fabian Schreiber, Marketing Manager at Goodyear.

During this weekend, the Goodyear paddle wheel steamer will be - as usual - available for round trips on the inland waters of Hamburg.

Responsible for this campaign at Goodyear is Fabian Schreiber (Marketing Manager Goodyear).
